A few words with Kevin Coakley

[words & photography by Zander Taketomo]

Kevin has had multiple features in Focus’ print, from a full length interview, to ‘incentives’ photos. As an introduction to the revamped website, he was the perfect fit for an online interview. There’s some noticeable motivation going on with Kevin, as last time we talked he was working on a video part for Static III – and now debuting an impressive part in Blueprints Make Friends with the Colour Blue. Read further to learn what he’s got going now, and projects in the works.

Yo Kevin, what are you up to? Teaching at Woodward yet? How is that going?

Not exactly teaching. We kind of just go to skate and hang out for a week. They have instructors for that job. We pretty much don’t have to do anything. Couple demos and that’s about it.

So, the Blueprint video finally made it to the United States, why’d you guys keep us on our toes for so long?

Long story short, one thing after another. You know how skate videos are. Things just get backed up and delayed and then delayed for a bit longer. Whatever, I’m glad it’s finally out now.

Being one of the only Americans on Blueprint, do you feel any need to make trips to the U.K?

Not unless there’s a trip. As long as I keep busy here then it’s all good. I would like to make it over there more often. I want to make a trip back to Glasgow, that city looked amazing to skate.

In your MFWTCB part, what trick took the most effort? Worst slam?

It would definitely have to be the wallie 50-50 on the rainbow bar. The slam I took in the video was only one of the many that I took on that thing. I remember magee being scared for my life. I took slam after slam after slam until we finally fixed the roll away for me to ride it out. I think it was the first day of the trip in Boston and I completely destroyed myself. It was all worth it in the end.

Perhaps it’s a necessary move, but you’re one of the only skateboarders who hasn’t left Boston to pursue skating as a career. What’s keeping you around?

Should this be a wake up call? Haha. Well Boston has always been home to me so it’s hard for me to leave. I’ve traveled to a lot of places and I almost feel like I belong in Boston, at least for right now. I guess I don’t really have a good enough reason to leave. Sometimes I feel like I need a change, it does get old at times. Hopefully I can find a reason soon before I get stuck forever.

[ollie, launch out to street]

Any planned trips for you before 2011?

Not really. We might do an rv trip from Boston to Ohio with a few of the blueprint guys. But That’s all that’s been talked about at the moment.

When can we expect the next collection of Coakley footage to drop?

Already trying to get it rolling. hopefully within a year Magee plans on releasing another edit. This time full HD with my mate Alex Pelletier behind the lense. Should be fun.

Thanks for the words mate.
